How Much Foc Is Too Much?[We’ve Got The Answer!]

Being an archer you will obviously want the perfect aim or shot for your arrow. And the best way to assure that you get the perfect shot is to have the perfect FOC.

A rightly calculated FOC will give you the perfect aim in any type of arrow shooting experience. And it’s completely fine to not know the right amount.

So, how much FOC is too much?

There are different percentages of FOC for different types of arrow shooting. We’ve also given you the pros and cons of different levels of FOC. We’ve shown you how to calculate the FOC accordingly. It’s wise to calculate beforehand as there are many benefits of having the right amount of FOC.

Though this is just a mere explanation to your question. We’ve got a detailed explanation in the article. So arch over your confusion and head your way into this article!

The Appropriate FOC For Arrow

Given below are the recommended amount of foc needed for different archery forms.

Fita (olympic style) : 11% to 16%

3-D archery : 6% to 12%

Field archery : 10% to 15%

Hunting : 10% to 15%

Anything above this is considered too much FOC.

Benefits of The Perfect FOC Amount

There are many benefits of the perfect heavy arrows

FOC Affects the arrow flight directly. So, knowing the amount of FOC is clearly very important. It additionally boosts accuracy too.

Penetration is also a large factor of the right amount of FOC. The arrow’s initial wallop is amplified when more of its weight is concentrated in the front half.

How To Calculate FOC

If you don’t take time to figure out the FOC your range will never be accurate. If your calculations are off, you will have a hard time being accurate. Correct calculation will help you achieve a good aim.

Finding out FOC isn’t rocket science. It’s very simple, to begin, check to see that your arrow is with the proper materials. For instance; nock, broadhand, vanes, and insert for the hunt you intend to undertake.

When you use a standard nock to locate your FOC and then switch to a lighted nock. You will notice a light shift in your foc. Your shaft will be heavier with lighted nocks.

Measure the bottom of the nock groove to the shaft’s end with a tape. After measuring, divide the length by two to get your arrow’s length. Mark the place on the shaft where it is necessary.

Here are some measuring tapes recommended for you:

Next, locate the arrow’s center of gravity. A table or a little bench will work just well for this purpose.

At this point, the arrow will not tip over the edge since it is properly balanced. Use a marker pen to mark that point.

Now, take a measurement between the two indentations on the shaft you just used. Next, divide the distance in between the two marks by the total length of the arrow. Finally, multiply this amount by 100 and you’re good to go.

It is also essential to know the arrow weight for a 50 pound bow.

What Happens If The FOC Is Too Much or Too Little

Given below are the downfalls of having your foc too high or too low.

If Too High

If your FOC is too high, the arrow’s weight will draw it down quickly. And when it weighs down it loses its trajectory. For this you will lose speed and your accuracy will suffer.

This might disappoint many people. Because of their fear of reducing their velocity, some shooters limit their range. False.

Speed and trajectory loss are minimized if FOC is calculated accurately. No matter how long it takes, make sure to have a shaft that flies slower. And also hits harder.

If Too Low

In the case of shooting an arrow with low FOC, it will fly unpredictably. Too much weight is carried by the shaft in the rear because of low FOC. This will result in the arrow having a shaky flight or traveling off course.

Penetration difficulties will also be a concern. FOC is still important to bowhunters who keep their shots within 40 yards or less. A calculated FOC percentage leads to more shots in which blood spills from both sides.

FAQs

Given below are some commonly asked questions from archers like you!-

What should be the ideal weight of the arrow for an elk?

420 grains is the minimum final arrow weight for an elk. This is for hunters drawing 60-70 pounds when hunting elk with a bow. The bows are getting more efficient nowadays. And lower-poundage bows can take down a large elk. Higher-poundage bows will obviously aid in taking down large elk.

Does a heavier arrow have a better flight?

Heavy arrows fly slowly, but are strong against the wind and penetrate deeply. Arrows are available in three different weight classes: light, medium, and heavy.

Light arrows can fly faster and form tighter groups but are more difficult to match than heavy arrows. Shooting the wrong arrow weight against the bow can damage the equipment and injure the shooter.

How will I know if the spine of my arrow is weak?

During the flight, if the arrow’s spine is either too stiff or too weak, the arrow will not be able to fix itself as quickly as it should. Unless the arrow is strong and does not continue to flex (has a low spine rating), it will deviate away from its intended target.

In the same way, if the arrow is unforgivingly stiff, it will not travel in the direction that the archer wishes.

Endnote

So far, I hope now you know how much FOC is too much. And it won’t be a problem to calculate the FOC anymore. Having the perfect FOC is every archer’s dream.

But always be sure to calculate accurately! Remember having too much or too little will affect your aim in different ways.
Good luck!
